Hey folks! This is Frank from Sit Happens Dog Training.

Welcome to another Q&A session where I answer questions from y'all on the internet.

Today's question is:

"What Is the Ideal Potty Frequency for My Dog?"

Answer from Frank Silva

Okay. Potty frequency. It could vary from dog to dog depending on the size of the dog, the bre, you know, how big, you know, whatever the breed is. Um, but in general, we should be taking our puppies out really frequent, anywhere from every hour to hour and a half until we start really controlling, you know, and and the more you take them out, it that frequency is going to start uh helping them connect the dots. Oh, potty is outside, not inside. So, does that answer your question? Absolutely. A grown dog can go up to six hours without going potty. As long as they went potty in the first thing in the morning, they get usually a routine is you you let your p dog out of their crate or if they're an older dog, maybe they don't go in the crate. You feed them and then they potty pretty much right after that. Not very dissimilar to humans. So, adult dogs can go 6 hours without going potty. I'm not recommending that, but some people work, right? We all have to work. And if you're using a crate and you're putting your dog in the crate, the chances of your dog pottying in their crate where they lay are very slim. Um, so, but for puppies, it has to be more frequent. Again, we're trying to implement a behavior of where potty is and also like I said earlier, you know, they do have smaller bladders and you know, they have to release more.

Summary - TLDR

Frank Silva stated that potty frequency varies but puppies need very frequent outings, ideally every hour to hour and a half, to help them understand that potty is an outside activity. They contrasted this with adult dogs, who can typically go up to six hours between potty breaks, especially if they have a routine and are crate trained, as they are less likely to soil their sleeping area
