Welcome to another Q&A session where I answer questions from y'all on the internet.
Today's question is:
So, great question. What are some top things to consider when potty training my puppy? Uh, I get this question very quite frequently. So, um, first and foremost, what I'm going to I'm going to talk about what you should not do when you're potty training. The first thing you should not do is if you find a potty or pee in the house and you did not see your dog do it, the old school way was to put their nose in it. No, no, no. And and and punish them for that potty. That is terrible. That is the worst thing you could do for the dog. It doesn't understand. After 10 seconds after doing that potty, the dog doesn't remember what what you're yelling at him for. All he knows is this crazy person's yelling at me. So, um, so first and foremost, do not do that to your dog. Secondly, what you should do, puppy potty training is about management. Management. This is where the crate comes in. Once you have your your puppy properly crate trained, the crate becomes your tool to be able to help your puppy understand, you know, this is where my safe place is to turn off. And when you take your puppy out, it's time to go potty. So, it's a tool to use. I'll give you a quick example. So, your puppy first thing in the morning, you take them out of the crate. Let's go potty. Let's say your puppy doesn't go potty. Most of them do in the morning, but I'm just going to use this as an example. So, let's say your puppy doesn't go potty. Okay, let's go back. And we go back in the crate and we wait another 15, 20 minutes and let's go potty again. If they go potty that time, hey, good boy. I don't You can also give them a little treat afterwards for the reward and then they can have freedom to to roam around the home. Now, with that said, I still recommend that you have some type of pen or gates in your home. If you have a large home, the worst thing you could do is let that puppy roam around the whole house looking and smelling and they will find a place to go potty. So, it's very important that you you have confinement management. you're taking your puppy out on a regular basis and that could be every hour to every two hours, but typically I always say that puppies suffer from what I call TWWB. And TWWB is teeny weeny bladders. So, make sure you're taking your puppy out on a regular basis when you're potty training.
