Hey folks! This is Frank from Sit Happens Dog Training.

Welcome to another Q&A session where I answer questions from y'all on the internet.

Today's question is:

"My Dog Is Aggressive Towards Men, Why Is That How to Correct It?"

Answer from Frank Silva

So, yeah. So, my dog's aggressive towards men and why is that and how do we fix it? So, um another question I get asked a lot. Um so, this isn't a this isn't a one an one specific answer question. There's a lot of reasons why a dog may be aggressive towards men. First reason would be um there was some abuse in the past by men. Okay? if it's an older dog, a rescue or shelter dog, uh they might have had a negative experience with a or multiple men. Um second reason would be socialization. Maybe the dog wherever it was before didn't see a lot of men. The another uh good factor would be men have like me a very doineering voice um a commanding voice which makes dogs afraid. So, that's one of the big things that that dogs, you know, it's called fear aggression. And sometimes that fear causes them to bark and get, you know, anxious. So, those are some of the main factors. Some of the other stuff could be illness with the dog going on. So, make sure you get your dog checked at the vet. Um, so how to fix it? Well, leash is your best tool. Okay. leash leash pressure and being able to control the dog number one uh with any kind of tool, maybe a muzzle if they are a little more aggressive or putting them in a crate when you know you have men coming over. Um just again managing it uh if you haven't had formal training to help fix that. Now, um, with training, I always say it doesn't necessarily mean you're going to rewire your dog and and it's not going to remember anymore that past trauma if it was trauma they had. What training is going to do, it's going to help you get better control because your dog's going to understand, oh, you're going to keep me safe, so I'm not going to be as scared of that man anymore. Does that answer the question?

Summary - TLDR

Frank Silva explained that aggression towards men can stem from past abuse, lack of socialization with men, or a fear response to a man's dominant voice. They advised using a leash as the primary tool for control, and in some cases, a muzzle or crating the dog when men are present, emphasizing that training helps the dog feel safe rather than rewiring past trauma
