Hey folks! This is Frank from Sit Happens Dog Training.

Welcome to another Q&A session where I answer questions from y'all on the internet.

Today's question is:

" How tight should I hold the leash?"

Answer:

So, that's a pretty broad question. So, the main answer is you're not going to have any tension on your leash when you're walking your dog. So, I have a leash right here. So, I want you to take take a look at how I'm holding this leash. See how I have this leash wrapped around my thumb? I'm going to take my hand and wrap it around the leash. This is the best control you have in walking your dog. So, how close should the dog be? You should not have this leash. The dog should not be walking in front of you. Okay? The dog should be walking next to you. So, you want to make sure you're choked up on the leash, but no tension should be on that leash. And if your dog is trained right, you should not have tension on that leash. And if the dog does pull, you're going to give them a quick pop and release. Pop and release.

Summary:

Frank Silva explained the proper way to hold a leash, stressing that there should be no tension on the leash when walking a dog and that the dog should walk next to the handler, not in front. He demonstrated a specific grip where the leash is wrapped around the thumb and hand for optimal control, suggesting a quick "pop and release" if the dog pulls
