Welcome to another Q&A session where I answer questions from y'all on the internet.
Today's question is:
If you have a dog that is high food drive and they love kibble, like my dogs do, they're okay responding to the kibble. Okay, that's a great question. How long does it take to train a command to my dog? So, there's been so many studies done on how a dog learns, okay? And we all know dogs learn by repetition, right? But most of us don't know how many reps it takes for a dog to learn. So in general, okay, some dogs learn faster than others. Some breeds are smarter than others. That's just the way it is. So in general, for a dog to really learn a new command or behavior, it could take a thousand reps. A thousand repetitions. Now, they may learn that repetition, but they may not respond to it with distractions and they get fixated on stuff. It could take 10,000 repetitions for that dog to make that command become automatic. Because again, a lot of people don't realize that dogs have a brain of a three to four year old toddler.
Frank Silva addressed the time it takes to train a dog a new command, noting that dogs learn through repetition and that some learn faster than others. He indicated that a dog might need up to 1,000 repetitions to learn a new command or behavior, and potentially up to 10,000 repetitions for the command to become automatic, especially with distractions
