Hey folks! This is Frank from Sit Happens Dog Training.

Welcome to another Q&A session where I answer questions from y'all on the internet.

Today's question is:

"How do I stop my dog from destroying everything when they get the zoomies?"

 Answer

How do I stop my dog from destroying everything when they get the zoomies? Okay, number one, puppy, we're talking about a puppy, it's puppy management. So, when your dog gets those zoomies, and some dogs get them two times a day, sometimes they get them more than that.

So, when they're in that zooie state, it's about puppy management. If they get too crazy and they're doing parkour on your furniture that you don't want them on, or they start needlessly grabbing stuff that they shouldn't have, the best thing to do, and this is where training comes in, like my training system, is being able to tell them to go somewhere to learn how to turn off. So, in my training system, there's something called place.

So when the puppy gets the zoomies and again they have to get this energy out. But if you don't have time to to help them get that energy out and you're cooking or you're dealing with kids or whatever, you're just going to say, "Hey, go place."

And again, place in my system is a clearly defined elevated area where you're going to tell your dog to go to learn how to just turn off for a while until you allow your dog to come off of it.

Summary

When a puppy is in a state of high energy, or "zoomies," and exhibits destructive behavior, Frank Silva recommended "puppy management". In their training system, this involves teaching the dog a command like "place," directing them to a defined, elevated area where they learn to turn off until the owner permits them to leave. This technique helps manage their energy, especially when the owner is busy (00:05:44).
