Hey folks! This is Frank from Sit Happens Dog Training.

Welcome to another Q&A session where I answer questions from y'all on the internet.

Today's question is:

"How do I stop my dog from crying/barking?"

Answer:

That's all you're going to get out of your dog. So, the more repetitions means the more that dog is going to respond to that command. Another question I get a lot, how to stop my dog from crying or whining or barking or um you know what, whatever. So, first thing you do is ignore. Okay? The more that you engage with a dog, the more they're going to continue that bad behavior. So, the first thing you do is ignore the dog. Now, let's say after 10, 15 minutes, they're still whining and barking and howling. Okay? Then, we have to go to the next step, which is called corrective action. Okay? Maybe it's maybe they're in a crate. You're trying to crate train. Okay? And maybe you need to cover the crate. And you know, one one example I give is if you have a dog that's whining in the crate and you're trying to crate train, cover it and leave the bottom, the very bottom open. What that does is it helps the dog lay down so he can see out or she can see out and it literally helps them turn off because they're in a lay down position. Okay. So, that's one corrective action you can make. After that, you can tap on the crate. Uh-uh. If you know, if they've been whining and barking for the last 15 minutes. Uh-uh. Just getting their attention. That's not a good behavior. It's a corrective action. It's not punishing the dog. It's just helping them understand. Don't do that. Okay

Summary:

Frank Silva provided advice on how to stop a dog from crying, whining, or barking, stating that the first step is to ignore the dog to avoid reinforcing the behavior. If the behavior persists, he suggested corrective actions such as covering a crate during crate training, or a gentle tap on the crate to get their attention without punishment
